“Others don’t change, we change” – THOMAS MERTON
Couples counseling is a sacred setting that allows partners to reconnect and rediscover the energy and passion that originally drew them together and to find the courage to work through the challenges of an ever-deepening relationship. Some use counseling before a large commitment like marriage or deciding to co-habitate or have a child, and this can present an opportunity to clarify values and work through conflicting ideas about how to move life plans ahead. But many others come for support to work through the inevitable changes that occur over the life span: growth. The job is to develop curiosity about the other partner and to begin to let go of what is “known” so that ever widening possibilities can be explored and ultimately embraced. Once safety is established couples are able to enter their states of vulnerability and express their hopes and desires and work through past injuries and injustices.
Common topics in couples work:

- Dealing with imbalances in work and family responsibilities
- Finding reconnection after illness, loss, or children leaving home
- Exploring sexuality, and the possibilities of open relationships and polyamory
- Finding time and energy to reconnect while remaining loyal to other priorities
